STATIC CYCLING RECORDS

WE DID IT! 3 new world records!

On Wednesday 26 May at 3pm, I started cycling on a Bamboo bike. Minus a few comfort breaks, I didn’t stop cycling for 24 hours, breaking the 1- and 12-hour world records, and setting a new 24-hour world record!

Kate Strong World Record - supported by volunteers

Cycling day & night, under a full moon and being supported by a team of 20 passionate volunteers, I covered 433.1 miles!

We also live-streamed the event on social media and held interactive Zoom calls for sponsors, partners and supporters to come and join us!

This story reached over 3 million people and reached national media outlets, such as BBC and ITV.

"Things happen outside our control, and it's our choice how we respond."

Since January 2020, I had been training and had the intention to attempt to break these records on 7th January 2021, yet this was not meant to be with the UK announcing national lockdown just two days before my attempt.

I could not continue.

FIND A WAY TO START, RATHER THAN REASON TO STOP

With lockdown preventing me from having anyone present, our team of 15 shrunk to 2 and my partner, Kieren, and I decided to go ahead with the one-hour world record attempt in our front lawn.

Asking our 2 neighbours to witness from their front windows, we respected the social distance rules AND found a way to go ahead!

In sub-zero temperatures, I cycled outside and broke the current one-hour world record by an additional 2 miles!

A NEW WORLD RECORD was achieved!  I covered 23.9 miles and overcame the multiple reasons I ‘should’ have not even attempted this record:

– I am not a sprinter, and have been training for a 24-hour record. Cycling for ‘only’ 1-hours is not my strength, nor does it match my training routine, focusing on distance over speed

– Being exposed to the elements meant I was breathing in sub-zero air and struggling to take on sufficient oxygen without burning my lungs

– We weren’t geared up operationally to hold a record ‘at home’ and it took a lot of adjusting and last-minute planning to create the event

– I would have much preferred drown my disappointment with a few glasses of bubbles (or gin, or both!) yet chose to feed the possibility of overcoming this huge obstacle

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES...

TOUR DE WALES

I don’t live life alone, and so wanted to stop creating solo challenges. This year, as I prepare to cycle the 600-mile route around the circumference of Wales, I also asked my partner, Kieren Windsor, to join me.

We both set off (on bamboo bikes) on Sunday 11th September 2022.
