E50: Double amputee summits Matterhorn – a world of ‘no excuses’ with Neil Heritage

Neil is a former soldier who lost both legs above the knee following a suicide bomb attack whilst serving in Iraq. Since his injury in 2004 Neil has learned to walk and then run, he has competed in triathlons and cycling events. Neil has also learned to climb, ski and is a qualified scuba-diving instructor.

In 2012 Neil was part of the 6 man Row to Recovery crew to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean raising over 1 million pounds for charity.

Neil set up and established the charity Climb to Recovery in 2016 which supports veterans in gaining outdoor instructor qualifications as a pathway back into employment. In 2020 Neil was joined by members of the charity where they climbed the Iconic Matterhorn mountain, this was Neil’s 3rd attempt at the summit and its success makes him the first person to complete the climb with his disability.
