Why this project is important

We need to change the way we move.

Did you know that there is a ratio of one car per two individuals in the United Kingdom?

Road transport is responsible for 80% of nitrogen dioxide air pollution along the roadside, which exceeds legal limits. The rise in road traffic during the past few years has a significant impact on the air quality of our towns and cities, as well as broader consequences such as noise pollution, reduced physical activity, access difficulties, and road accidents.

Air pollution is not only having a detrimental effect on the environment, but it is also adversely affecting our health.

In the UK, between 28,000 to 36,000 premature deaths occur annually as a result of air pollution. Long-term exposure to air pollution has health consequences, as it exacerbates respiratory and cardiovascular diseases by increasing the number of harmful particles in the air.

Research suggests that if a person replaces a 10-mile car trip with a bike ride, they can prevent about 5 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from entering the atmosphere. Over time, this can add up to significant reductions in emission-related illness and help combat climate change.

In short, our travel decisions directly impact our personal and planetary health.

What does beryl offer to help?

Beryl is the UK’s leading shared sustainable transport operator, championing greener travel options to help reduce road congestion and improve air quality and public health.

They have delivered affordable bike, e-bike, e-cargo bike and e-scooter schemes in locations around the country; including London, Norwich, Watford, Hereford, Bournemouth, Greater Manchester, Solent, Plymouth, Brighton and Cornwall.

Their vehicles are not only fun, sustainable and easy to use, they’re also cost-effective, especially when compared to private vehicle ownership which requires spending on tax, petrol, MOT, maintenance, storage and insurance.

Since launching their first bike share scheme in 2019, Beryl has generated nearly 4.3 million journeys across nearly 13 million kilometres. Almost a quarter of these journeys have replaced road transport journeys, including driving or being a passenger in a car, van, taxi or motorbike. According to industry calculations, this has saved nearly 623 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions!

What can i do to get involved

You can hire a Beryl bike, e-bike or an e-scooter through the Beryl app, available for free download on the App Store for iOS, and the Google Play Store for Android users.

AND for Climate Cycle, we’re hosting multiple ride-a-long cycle rides with me 🙂

On Tuesday Beryl and their scheme partners National Grid will join me on the ride and are also offering riders free access to bikes and e-scooters so they can get involved. Participants can meet at 3pm at the Wymondham Library bay and take part in a 10 mile, 90 minute ride to Norwich, which is open to all abilities and will be mostly flat on cycle paths.

On Wednesday 7 June, I will also be hosting another group ride at 10:30am, cycling from County Hall along Marriots Way to Gressenhall Museum. I will be joined on this ride by members of Norfolk County Council’s Active Travel Team and Beryl.
