Why this project is important

Many people don’t realise that harmful petrochemicals are used in the production of many everyday items including household cleaners, cosmetics, shampoos, conditioners, soaps and suncreams. These products all include surfactants, which work to decrease the surface tension between a liquid and another liquid, gas or solid. This allows the liquid to foam, disperse, wet or work as a detergent.

For years these surfactants have been created using petrochemicals which are harmful to the environment and release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during the manufacturing process. The air pollution this produces has a negative effect on our health as well, as it lowers the air quality, which can cause respiratory problems.

The good news is that Holiferm has found a way to manufacture surfactants without using petrochemicals making them more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Surfactants produced in this way are called biosurfactants.

What does Holiferm offer to help?

Holiferm has designed and developed an innovative fermentation with integrated gravity separation technology to manufacture biosurfactants. This basically means that much like you would use fermentation to brew a beer, Holiferm uses this process to create biosurfactants. Holiferm uses natural ingredients including rapeseed oil, glucose and yeast found in honey from sustainable stocks in this process.

Using their innovative production method Holiferm have significantly reduced the amount of carbon dioxide produced during manufacturing and in fact have designed the method to capture carbon as well. Holiferm have committed to removing 250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2035.

What can i do to get involved

Ask questions and find out the answers about the products you use. Be aware of the ingredients in the products you buy, how they were created and what impact they have on the environment.

You can already buy shampoo and conditioner bars from An’du and cleaning products from Mix Clean Green, which contain Holiferm’s biosurfactants as well as many other sustainable ingredients. These are being used during the Climate Cycle.
