WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

What is World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a globally recognised annual event that is celebrated on June 5th every year. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about environmental issues and to encourage people to take action to protect the planet. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1974, and since then, it has become an important day for people around the world to come together and focus on environmental issues.

Why is it important

There are several reasons why World Environment Day is important to celebrate. One of the main reasons is that it helps to raise awareness about environmental issues. By highlighting the impact of human activities on the planet, World Environment Day encourages people to take action to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the environment. This can be through small changes in behavior, such as recycling more, using public transport, or reducing energy consumption.

Another reason why World Environment Day is important is that it encourages collaboration between different groups of people. Environmental issues are global problems that require global solutions. By bringing together people from different backgrounds and cultures, World Environment Day fosters a sense of community and encourages people to work together to address environmental challenges.

I consciously chose to start Climate Cycle, a 3,000 mile bike ride around mainland Britain on a bamboo bike on World Environment day.

I see me as part of nature, not its protector or an outsider. This ‘knowing’ is not taught in mainstream education. We are separated from the wild world and, gradually, we forget how interconnected we are with the environment. When we suffer, nature suffers and vice versa.

Note: I am purely sharing my musings, about a link to our mental health being linked to climate health.

But… it is curious to me to see that these graphs look quite similar…

HOW can i get involved?

World Environment Day isn’t just a day, it’s the start of making a change that can last and positively impact the environment  for years to come.

The environment is not something that we can take for granted. Climate change, pollution, and other environmental issues are serious problems that require urgent action. This can be addressed by celebrating the action we are taking as well as committing to one simple shift in our behaviour to protect the planet and preserve it for future generations.

I visited 30+ projects that are all positively contributing to the environment. Why not click on some links below and explore what else you can be doing to help celebrate – and protect – our environment:
