Why this project is important
The United Kingdom wastes a significant amount of food throughout the supply chain, including agriculture. In 2018, it was estimated that the UK wasted approximately 9.5 million tons of food, with a value of around £19 billion.
It is challenging to obtain precise figures on food waste specifically at the agricultural level. However, it is estimated that around 3.6 million tons of crops intended for human consumption are wasted annually on farms. This waste can occur due to factors such as weather conditions, pest damage, oversupply, or cosmetic standards imposed by retailers.
The UK government and various organisations have taken steps to address food waste. For instance, the UK’s Courtauld Commitment brings together businesses, governments, and organizations to reduce food and drink waste. The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has been working on initiatives to tackle food waste throughout the supply chain, including agriculture.
Redistribution and Surplus Food: Efforts have been made to redirect surplus food to those in need. Charitable organisations, food banks, and redistribution schemes work to collect and distribute surplus food from farms, retailers, and other sources.
We can also discover the ancient practice of gleaning, where we can tithe off the land to use edible, yet wasted food, from the agricultural land near us.
What is Gleaning Cornwall?
Gleaning Cornwall’s innovative approach to tackling food waste not only benefits the environment but also improves health and well-being in local communities. By rescuing surplus produce and redistributing it to those in need, Gleaning is making a tangible difference. Whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, everyone can play a part in supporting this important cause.
Gleaning Cornwall’s work is of paramount importance for multiple reasons:
- Fighting Food Waste: Gleaning actively combats the wasteful practices that contribute to global food waste, aligning with sustainable development goals.
- Community Support: The organization plays a vital role in supporting local communities, particularly those facing food insecurity or limited access to fresh produce.
- Environmental Stewardship: By reducing food waste and promoting sustainable practices, Gleaning Cornwall contributes to a healthier planet for future generations.
