Why this project is important

Addressing the energy source is critical for the UK for several reasons:

  1. Energy Security: The UK, like any other country, relies on a stable and secure energy supply to power its economy and meet the needs of its citizens. Currently, the UK relies heavily on international investment and supply of fossil fuels. Diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on imports helps protect against potential disruptions in supply from geopolitical tensions or natural disasters in other countries.

  2. Climate Change and Environmental Concerns: The burning of fossil fuels for energy is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. By transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, such as renewables (wind, solar, hydro, etc.) and nuclear power, the UK can reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change.

  3. Air Quality and Public Health: Traditional fossil fuels, especially coal and certain types of oil, release harmful pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter when burned. These pollutants contribute to air pollution and have adverse effects on public health, leading to respiratory problems and other illnesses. Shifting to cleaner energy sources can improve air quality and overall public health.

  4. Economic Benefits: Investing in renewable energy and other clean technologies can stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities in the UK. The renewable energy sector has the potential to become a major industry, attracting investments and generating employment in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and research and development.

  5. International Commitments: The UK is a signatory to international agreements and frameworks aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. To meet its targets under agreements like the Paris Agreement, the UK must make significant strides in transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

  6. Energy Affordability: Addressing the energy source can also play a role in ensuring energy affordability for consumers and businesses. Renewable energy sources, once established, have lower operating costs and are less vulnerable to price fluctuations compared to fossil fuels, which can lead to more stable energy prices in the long run.

  7. Technological Advancements: Embracing new and cleaner energy technologies can drive innovation and technological advancements in the UK. This can not only benefit the energy sector but also spill over into other industries, boosting overall competitiveness and economic development.

Overall, transitioning to sustainable and cleaner energy sources is critical for the UK’s long-term economic prosperity, environmental well-being, public health, and international commitments to combat climate change. It requires a concerted effort from government, businesses, and individuals to achieve a more sustainable and resilient energy future.

What IS THE CENTRE FOR ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY?

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), is a pioneering organisation in the field of sustainability and renewable energy based in Wales.

The Centre for Alternative Technology is an educational charity that was established in 1973. It is located in Machynlleth, Wales, and aims to inspire, inform, and enable people to live more sustainably. CAT promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, ecological building practices, and sustainable lifestyles through various educational programs, training courses, publications, and practical demonstrations.

Their main focus areas include renewable energy systems (such as solar, wind, and hydro power), sustainable building techniques (low-impact construction, natural materials), and ecological approaches to land use and agriculture. They also engage in research and policy work related to sustainability and climate change.

What can i do to get involved

We need to learn more about sourcing our energy and food more sustainably – individually and as farmers – as well as reducing our dependency on on energy and fragile systems (improved architecture, locally grown food…).

The Centre for Alternative Technology offers a wide range of learning opportunities. From day visits, online courses to live-in degrees, there are many options for us to upskill.
