Why this project is important

Foraging along the hedgerows in late summer and autumn is among my fondest childhood memories. Still nothing quite beats scoffing on an abundance of blackberries down country lanes. Such simple delights like how to find and identify free and healthy food, however, can be easily taken for granted.

With fewer and fewer wild spaces for people to roam and enjoy, coinciding with readily available supermarket supplies, today’s generations have less opportunity, and less motivation to learn valuable skills such as foraging. For example, a recent survey revealed that 78% of British children do not know how blackberries grow. Meanwhile, other reports indicate that we rely on just 15 crop plants to meet most of our nutritional needs, despite up to 300,000 potentially edible plant species around the world.

The practice of gathering wild plants, fungi, seaweeds, and other natural resources brings numerous benefits; from opening a world of new flavours and medicinal properties, connecting us with and fostering a deep appreciation of nature and the seasons, easing the burden of rising food costs, encouraging our self-sufficiency, and reducing our reliance on an unstable food system. Current industrialised agricultural practices are also a leading driver of habitat loss, pollution, and climate change, and by keeping traditional knowledge alive this may be part of the solution to building a resilient and sustainable future.

what is totally wild UK?

Founded by James Wood and run by his team of expert foragers, Totally Wild UK have a primary mission to make foraging accessible to as many people as possible. By running foraging courses across the UK, they promote learning through fun and exciting experiences with the goal of showcasing the amazing flavours to be found in the wild.

From free recipes to field guides to be found on their website, Totally Wild aim to share their knowledge as freely and openly as possible, empowering individuals to safely and sustainably forage, while also helping to develop foraging as a viable career for those interested.

Wild food is all around us, but abundance and diversity depend on healthy ecosystems. So, Totally Wild also give 15% of their experience sales to the wild spaces to help save and support the wild spaces that they work with.

What can i do to get involved

Sign up to a Totally Wild foraging course near you or online to increase your knowledge, confidence, and meet like-minded people.

Hedgerows, not Waitrose! Ditch the supermarket trolly and get outside.

Branch out and add some wild flavours to your meals, and learn some wild food recipes!

Take care and start simple. Respect nature and only take what you need, let the rest grow and regenerate. Remember that plants and fungi can be poisonous – never eat anything unless you are 100% sure of what it is. An expert guide can help you, and you can start with the easy stuff – like blackberries!
