What is this event?

Over the past few years, Norfolk County Council has been nurturing and developing numerous projects and partnerships to not only improve the quality of their residents’ lives, but also to repair and restore the countryside. Tonight is all about celebrating this great work!

I will be hosting a panel at this evening event, where we will be hearing from Eco Champions who are passionate about a variety of topics, such as composting and reusing our household appliances.

Beryl’s scheme partners, National Grid and Norfolk County Council will also be present to showcase what actions they are taking towards supporting individual and planetary health.

New U Enterprises will also be hosting a really cool workshop where we can make our own cycling cap using reclaimed and recycled materials! What a great thing to get involved with.

What can i do to get involved

The fashion sector is the second-largest industrial sector, and for carbon emissions, it is ranked higher than air-travel! (OMG!)

The fashion industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions, releasing 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon over the lifecycle of a garment, including manufacturing, transportation, and disposal. Unfortunately, the prevalent attitude of wearing clothing only a few times has led to an increase in discarded items and a rise in overconsumption and overproduction. This attitude must be eliminated to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint. In the first 15 years of the 21st century, clothing production doubled, and European brands went from producing two collections per year to as many as 24. Consequently, clothing utilization declined by 36% from 2003 to 2018, with a third of young women considering a garment “old” after just one or two wears.

Reducing the fashion industry’s significant carbon footprint requires collective and individual action to shift the practices of major brands. Here’s some steps can we take to bring about this change:

  1. Buy less
  2. Buy second hand
  3. Choose natural materials
  4. Look after our clothes & prolong their life
  5. Do your research on ‘truly sustainable’ clothing options (link below)
